Car or train?
All six want a car. Indiana Dunes and Milwaukee are both reachable by train (South Shore Line and Amtrak's Hiawatha), and if you only want the town centres the train is genuinely easier — the driving versions here exist because the dunes' trailheads and Milwaukee's lakefront are spread out. Starved Rock, Lake Geneva, Galena and Saugatuck have no useful transit; those are car days or they don't happen.
Driving out of Chicago — the practical bits
- How far can you realistically drive from Chicago and still be back the same day?
- About three hours each way is the practical limit before the day becomes mostly driving. That reaches Galena, Saugatuck and the Wisconsin lake country; anything further — Door County, the Upper Peninsula — is an overnight.
- Which of these works best in winter?
- Milwaukee and Galena are indoor-heavy and fine year-round. Starved Rock is at its best in winter when the canyon waterfalls freeze, but the trails ice over — check the state park's conditions page before you go. The Michigan and Indiana lakeshore drives are quiet and cold; beautiful, but plan on wind.
- Do I need to book anything ahead?
- Indiana Dunes charges a park entrance fee, and Starved Rock's lodge restaurant fills at weekends. Otherwise these are turn-up days. Check opening hours before you drive — small-town Illinois and Wisconsin museums often close Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Can I use these as a starting point and change them?
- Yes — that's the point. Open a day, swap any stop for one of three alternatives, or rebuild the whole day if you want a different mood. The drive times recalculate as you go.
