Car or train?
Salem and Providence are both easy on the commuter rail, and Salem in October is genuinely better by train — the town closes streets and the car parks fill by mid-morning. Cape Ann, Plymouth, Portsmouth and the Berkshires want a car: the coast road between Gloucester and Rockport, and the Mohawk Trail west, are the reason to go. Two practical notes: most Massachusetts tolls are all-electronic (E-ZPass or a plate-read bill sent to your hire company), and beach-town parking in July and August is both scarce and expensive — arrive before ten or plan a shoulder-season visit.
Driving out of Boston — the practical bits
- Is Salem worth it outside October?
- Yes, and it's more pleasant — the Peabody Essex Museum, the House of the Seven Gables and the waterfront are all year-round, without the Halloween crowds. In October the town is a festival and the drive in is the hard part.
- How far are the Berkshires, really?
- About two and a half hours to Lenox or Stockbridge, which makes it a long day for one museum. It works best if the drive is part of the plan — the Mohawk Trail (Route 2) west is one of the region's best roads — or as an overnight.
- Which is the best autumn-colour drive?
- The Mohawk Trail toward the Berkshires peaks first, usually early-to-mid October; the coast holds colour later. Foliage timing moves a week or two each year — check the state's foliage tracker the week you go rather than trusting an average.
- Any of these good in bad weather?
- Providence and Salem: museums, indoor markets and short walks between them. Plymouth's Mayflower II and museum work too, though the waterfront is exposed.
- Can I edit the plan?
